Prince Charlie's House
Dating back to 1674 Prince Charlie’s House has a rich and fascinating history. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie set up his headquarters here in 22 High Cross Street, Brampton. His horses were stabled in the building across the road in the barracks just on the corner of Market Square and it was in front of this very building that the mayor and two Aldermen of Carlisle arrived to hand over the keys to Carlisle Castle to Bonnie Prince Charlie.
In 1800 the building was recorded as the Kings’ Arms with the owners adding a third floor with lodging rooms and stables to the rear. Towards the mid 1800’s the name of this popular Public House was again changed this time to the Freemans Arms but then ceased trading following the death of the owners in 1860. Papers then show in 1887 the house was occupied by Mr W Hetherington a Master Draper where the upstairs floors were used by his many assistants and apprentices. The building changed hands numerous times over the next 75 years with High Cross Street being littered with shoemakers until the late 1800’s.
The Black Attic
In 1985 a Shoemaker and his wife, Thomas and Mary Corbett took up lodgings in 22 High Cross Street. At this time the third-floor windows had been removed and the lodging rooms reorganised which left a lot of disturbance in the house. Mary and Thomas often referred to the house thereafter as being haunted. The area that gave concern was the stairs leading to the third floor which had been turned into the attic. It was said as a direct result of the changes to the third floor, a ghost had become displaced and was often experienced at the top of the stairs searching for its previous bedroom. Since those days this part of the house is still referred to as “The Black Attic
The building now houses Charlie's Quarters on the first and second floor and Charlie's Bistro which is located on the ground floor. If you wish to dine at the bistro you can view their current menu and book a table via their website. www.charliesbistrobrampton.co.uk
